Pirates Vs Red Sox game preview 4-5-17

Making his Red Sox debut the LHP from Lakewood, Florida Chris Sale looks to propel the Red Sox to a great start. Facing a Pirates team that seemed to place toward the middle of the pack in almost every category. The one category the Pirates placed toward the top of the league was in SO. Sale last season tied for 5th in the league in SO with 233 tied with Chris Archer. So, that gives me the hope that Sale will be able to carve up this Pirates lineup. In 9 appearances against the N.L Central Sale is 4-1 with a 1.00 ERA. Giving up 6 earned runs in 54 IP a .171 BAA (33-193) and 11.5 SO/9 IP (69 SO, 9 BB).

Coming into this game the Red Sox are 6-7  against the Pirates all time, also 2-5 since the start of the 2017 season. With any other pitcher besides Sale, this game may be chalked up to the Pirates. Like I said earlier though Sale has had tremendous success against the N.L Central. Although, this is his first time facing this Pirates team, even though he isn’t familiar with the batters. It shouldn’t have any effect on his performance. I expect Sale to go a minimum of 7 IP, with 2 H, 0 BB. 6 SO, 0 ER. Its going to be a good day for the Red Sox ace Chris Sale and hopefully able to get a W.

One of the more potent offenses in the league, the Red Sox are a dangerous lineup to face no matter the pitcher. Taillon in 2016 had a decent year going 5-4 with a 3.38 ERA in 104 IP and 1.12 WHIP. Against a lineup like the Red Sox, Taillon could potentially struggle tonight. Another interesting thing to look at tonight is Mookie Betts, and for a very special reason. Mookie Betts has not struck out in his last 82 regular season plate appearances, going back to his final PA of the 2016 season. According to Elias it is the longest active streak in the majors, the last player with a longer streak is Norichika Aoki with 96 PA. So, Taillon will have his hands full tonight not only with Mookie Betts, but also with Benintendi and the rest of the line up.

Red Sox

An overall look at this game, defensively both teams seem to be even, although offense may be where these teams are separated. The Red Sox have to much fire power in the line up, consistency will be the key to the season. They will pull off the same or close to the same stats as last year. The Red Sox could make it to the ALCS and even to the World Series. Still a tad to early in the season to make that sort of judgement call. Back to today’s game the Red Sox should have a easy match up predicting a 4-1 victory. Chris Sale will also pick up his first win as a Red Sox and first win of the season.

*Mookie Betts has been scratched from the line up with the Flu
