Pittsburgh Pirates place ace pitcher Gerrit Cole on DL with elbow inflammation

Pittsburgh Pirates ace Gerrit Cole has been placed on the 15-day DL with elbow inflammation.

Cole’s last start was against the Houston Astros on Wednesday where he gave up 5 earned runs in 5 innings pitched. That outing raised his season ERA to 3.55. This season has not been kind to the young Pirates pitcher. Along with his inflated ERA, Cole has a 7-9 record and only a 1.7 WAR so far this season. Last year, Cole finished the year with a 19-8 record, a 2.60 ERA and a 4.5 WAR.

There is no doubt that Cole has struggled this season but maybe some of his hardships can be attributed to a nagging injury. With the Pirates in the thick of a wild card race, they will need Cole to come back 100% healthy if they hope to make the playoffs.

In a corresponding move, the Pirates have recalled starting pitcher Steven Brault to fill Cole’s rotation spot. In three starts this season, Brault has a 3.86 ERA with 12 strikeouts in 14 innings pitched.

Brault is one of a few young pitchers that the Pirates have had to use this season due to injury to their starting staff. If the Pirates want to make the playoffs, they will need to get their pitching staff healthy and that starts with getting their ace back.
