Pure Michigan 400 Race Preview

Pure Michigan 400

This weekend, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series returns to Michigan International Speedway for the Pure Michigan 400. This is the 24th event on the 2016 schedule and the 95th Cup race at MIS. Matt Kenseth scored a dominating win last season in this event, leading 146 of the 200 laps and parlaying his pole position into his third win of 2015.

The Race To The Chase: For drivers on the outside looking in, there are only 3 races left to try and capture an all important win. Some drivers on the brink of missing out will view Michigan as their best shot. Greg Biffle, Kyle Larson, and Ryan Blaney all have one reason or another to be optimistic at the 2 mile oval. Biffle is a former winner there, Larson has an Xfinity win on Auto Club Speedway (a sister track to MIS), and Blaney drives for the famed Wood Brothers, the all time winningest team at Michigan.

Speaking of Chase…: Many expect rookie Chase Elliott to collect a win this season and it very well may come Sunday. Elliott finished second in the tour’s first visit here in June and will likely bring a ton of confidence and a fast car with him this weekend. Don’t be surprised if the number 24 leads the field to the checkers at race’s end.

Running On Fumes: Races at Michigan have a lengthy history of coming down to who can stretch their fuel the longest. The track’s wide surface and multiple lanes lend to clean racing and long green flag runs so teams always anticipate the need to get the best mileage. The Penske duo of Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski have enjoyed some successes recently in this strategy game and could very well do so again this weekend.
