Rajai Davis joins Oakland on a one-year deal

Outfielder Rajai Davis is now a member of the Oakland Athletics after agreeing to a one-year, $6 million deal with the A’s. Davis, 36, spent 2016 with the Cleveland Indians. With Cleveland, Davis hit 12 home runs to go along with his 48 RBI’s and .249 batting average.

Even though Davis posted a below average 0.5 WAR in 2016, he still showed value on the base paths by stealing 43 bags in 134 games last season. Of course, the most memorable moment for Davis came in Game 7 of the World Series when he blasted a two-run home run in the eighth inning to tie the game at six.

This signing will mark Davis’ second stint with the Athletics. From 2008-2010, Davis played in 369 games for Oakland and hit eleven home runs and drove in 119 runs. While with the A’s in 2009, Davis posted career highs in WAR (3.0), batting average (.305), and OPS (.783).

Davis will bring speed to a team that only stole 50 bases in 2016. Rajai is a speedster and has tallied more than 40 stolen bases in a season five times.

While Davis does not bring much pop offensively, he should be able to help the A’s improve on their .304 team OBP in 2016. Davis has a career .314 OBP, but last time he played for Oakland he recorded a .360 OBP.

In 2016, Oakland ranked 28th in runs scored, 26th in batting average, 28th in OBP, and 26th in slugging percentage. Davis is not a guy that can help those numbers much, but he will be signed to a low risk contract in 2017.

The Athletics more than likely made this move with the hopes that they could get something for Davis at the trade deadline if he has a good half season. If that backfires, he will not cost Oakland much money and they will have a solid guy who can pinch run when called upon.
