Real Madrid’s left back Marcelo suffers a Calf Strain

Madrid, Spain – Brazilian left back Marcelo will be joining Casemiro and Pepe on the sidelines as he has suffered a calf muscle strain, the club confirmed.

“Following tests carried out today on Marcelo at the Sanitas La Moraleja University Hospital, he has been diagnosed with a grade 2 muscle strain in the soleus muscle of his right calf. His recovery will continue to be monitored,” the statement read.

Marcelo suffered the injury during the 1-1 draw with Villarreal on Wednesday (21 September) night.

Initial reports in Spain have suggested that Marcelo will be sidelined for between two and three weeks.

He will miss Saturday’s trip to Las Palmas and is expected to be unavailable for the Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund next week, or the league match at home to Eibar on October 2.

Both, Marcelo and Casemiro, are key elements in Zinedine Zidane’s system at the Estadio Santiago, while Pepe’s has been a dependent veteran backup to Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane in the back.

In addition to this, Fabio Coentrao still not fit for competition, meaning, Nacho or Danilo will have to pick up the slack left by Marcelo on the left flank.

Also, Colombian star James Rodriguez will likely return to the starting lineup with Toni Kross playing in Casemiro’s position.
