Real Madrid defender Pepe will be out against Sevilla with a calf injury

Madrid, Spain – Real Madrid have confirmed that Pepe is sidelined with a calf injury, amid reports he is considering a big money offer from Chinese club Hebei China Fortune to join them next summer.

The Portugal international last played in a 3-2 win over Deportivo La Coruna on December 10.

The 34-year-old traveled with the squad to Japan for the Club World Cup last month, but played no part as Zinedine Zidane’s side defeated Club America and Kashima Antlers to lift the trophy.

Pepe looks likely to miss at the least Madrid’s Copa del Rey last-16 first leg against Sevilla on Wednesday after the European champions confirmed the 33-year-old’s injury.

“Following the tests carried out on Pepe at the Sanitas la Moraleja University Hospital, the player has been diagnosed with a grade 2 injury to the inner calf muscle of his left leg. His recovery will continue to be assessed,” a brief statement read on the club’s official website.

With Pepe and Sergio Ramos out, Zidane will now have to play Raphael Varane and Nacho Fernandez in the back field with little options elsewhere.

In addition, Pepe’s contract with Real Madrid is due to expire in June. Due to this uncertainty, rumors in Portugal picked up by O Jogo claim that Hebei Fortune, managed by former Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini have stepped in with a 15 million euro-a-year salary proposal.
