Reed To Attempt Talladega Cup Debut

Ryan Reed

NASCAR Xfinity Series regular Ryan Reed will attempt to make his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series debut on October 23rd at Talladega Superspeedway. Reed, who drives for Roush Fenway Racing full time in the Xfinity Series, will pilot a number 99 Roush Fenway Ford sponsored by his full time sponsor, Lilly Diabetes/ American Diabetes Association.

Five years ago, Reed was told his type 1 diabetes would keep him from ever being able to race again. But through a regiment of strict diet and exercise, he manages his diabetes along with a wireless glucose monitoring device that provides real time in-race data to his medical team in California.

Ryan has 1 win in the NASCAR Xfinity Series at Daytona International Speedway and was one of the 12 drivers to qualify for that division’s first ever Chase for the Xfinity Championship this season. He has qualified in the top ten in all 3 of his Xfinity starts at the 2.66 mile Alabama track and has led 37 laps in those races.

“I am really looking forward to Talladega and racing in the Sprint Cup race”, said Reed, who will be looking to become the 19th driver to start a Cup race for Roush. “For anyone that has ever had the chance to get behind the wheel of a racecar, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is the ultimate goal.”

For Roush Fenway Racing, the weekend marks a return to the track for the number 99, which was a mainstay at the Cup level from 1996 through 2014. During those 19 seasons, Jeff Burton and Carl Edwards compiled 40 Cup wins, led over 9,500 laps, and finished top 5 in the final points standings on 8 occasions in that span, including runner up in both 2008 and 2011.

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race from Talladega Superspeedway takes place on Sunday October 23rd at 2 pm ET. Live coverage of the Alabama 500 will be on NBCSN and MRN Radio.
