Ring of Honor to introduce Six Man Championships

Earlier this week Ring of Honor announced that they will be introducing a Six Man Tag Team Championship this fall.

This marks the first time since the 1980s that an American based professional wrestling promotion will have such a championship. With perhaps the most famous Six Man Tag Team Championship matches happening in World Class Championship Wrestling between the legendary teams of the Von Erichs and the Fabulous Freebirds.

Six man tag team matches have been a staple in wrestling for generations and with ROH’s partnerships with Mexico’s CMLL and New Japan Pro Wrestling the timing appears to have been at a great time to implement a whole new division to ROH for the first time since the Television Championship was introduced in 2010.

New Japan Pro Wrestling recently found success with a six man division with the NEVER Openweight Six Man Tag Team Championships. A number of ROH talents have competed in this division including The Briscoes.

With ROH’s ever expanding reach in the wrestling world it may be safe to expect this division to be able to catch on with fans immediately and potentially start a trend in the U.S.

A tournament will be held to crown the inaugural Ring of Honor Six Man Tag Team Championships beginning during the ROH All Star Extravaganza weekend at the end of September with the tournament with the finals taking place at Final Battle in December in the Hammerstein Ballroom at the Manhattan Center.
