Robert Kelley and Mack Brown have made a strong case for their names to be on the Redskins 53-man roster for the regular season.

Robert Kelley has been the biggest surprise on the Redskin offense so far. Kelley capped of an impressive preseason with 39 carries and 227 rushing yards. Last night against Tampa Bay, he finished with 99 yards on 16 carries.

Kelley has shown the ability to protect the football and finish runs. Most young running backs struggle with pass protection, but Kelley has shown the coaching staff he’s capable of the task. Granted it is the preseason, but the undrafted back out of Tulane has dominated the competition.

With the injury to staring running back Matt Jones, Kelley was giving an opportunity to work with the first team offense and he has flourished. Although he may not be ready to start right away in week one, Kelley should factor heavily into the running back rotation.

Jones has shown the inability to stay healthy, and has had issues protecting the football. Chris Thompson is the most experienced back on the roster, but at 5’8 195 lbs, he has his limitations. Kelley may lack the explosiveness of Matt Jones or the athleticism of Chris Thompson, but he’s tough, precise runner. Those same intangibles may lead him in the starting lineup very soon.

Second-year running back Mack Brown, had a strong performance last night. So strong in fact, that he’s put some pressure on the decision makers at Redskins Park.

“Yeah, that’s something we’ve got to talk about, Jay Gruden told reporters. I was happy to see Mack. He did show up. Made the decision even tougher. Hopefully we can keep all of them, but we’ll put together the scouting staff, coaching staff and figure it out.”

Brown finished the night with 19 carries on 149 yards. His 60 yard touchdown run was the highlight of the game. The deadline for NFL teams to meet the 53 man roster limit, is September 3rd, 4 P.M. eastern time.
