Yesterday New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that the State of New York, and Major League Baseball had formed a partnership that will create a youth baseball and softball academy.

The Academy will be built at Roberto Clemente State Park in the Bronx. The academy will serve 1,500 youth immediately, which is triple the amount of kids currently participating in the park’s baseball programs. The newly renovated baseball and softball facility will be funded through New York State ($6.5 million), Major League Baseball ($4 million) and New York Yankees DH Alex Rodriguez ($750,000).

In a statement given by the Governor, he talked about providing safe and efficient areas for outdoor activity for the new generation of New Yorkers.

“We must invest in the next generation of New Yorkers and give them every opportunity to grow and succeed,” Governor Cuomo said. “Ensuring our communities have safe areas for outdoor activities is fundamental to a child’s upbringing and this great partnership will provide the children of the Bronx an exceptional new facility and the opportunity to develop essential skills they will draw on throughout their lives.”

The new facility will be operated by Harlem RBI, Harlem RBI will give all the basic baseball equipment, the umpiring fees and provide a means of transportation for the teams.

The official baseball programming will start in spring 2017 and the softball programming will begin in spring 2018.  The Softball program will start later because a new multi-purpose field will be completed just before spring 2018.
