RUMOR: Target Scaling Back On Sponsorship Of Kyle Larson For 2017

Target, who is a longtime primary sponsor for Chip Ganassi Racing will be scaling back on it’s sponsorship for Kyle Larson and the 42 car for the 2017 season. Sports Business Journal first reported the rumor Monday.

Target will reduce it’s sponsorship with the 42 team by ten races by mutual consent with Chip Ganassi Racing in a effort to allow new sponsorship for the team. The No. 42 also was adorned by Energizer batteries, Huggies, Axe and other companies that cross promotes with Target, but doesn’t fully sponsor.

“It’s something that we worked on together,” CGR President Steve Lauletta told Sports Business Journal Monday. “It allows Target to continue to market their brand in a big way with Kyle Larson, our team and NASCAR. But allows us a little more flexibility to react to opportunities that were coming the team’s way. Everybody should benefit from that.”

Target is entering 2017 in a contract year with Chip Ganassi Racing and Kyle Larson and there’s a possibility of them leaving after next season, but that is a budding rumor and won’t be announced for months to come if that will be the case. Target already scaled back with it’s motorsports involvement when it ended a 27 year sponsorship with Chip Ganassi Racing’s INDYCAR team at the conclusion of the 2016 season.
