Rusney Castillo’s hefty contract bits Red Sox

Boston Red Sox outfielder Rusney Castillo has been placed on outright waivers. This means that if no teams claim the overpaid Castillo off waivers, then he will be out righted to the minors.

In 2014, Castillo signed a seven-year, $72.5 million deal. He is making $10.5 million a year and is set to make $46 million through the 2020 season.

In his 337 major league at-bats, he has hit .262. The Red Sox where hoping that Castillo could continue to progress and turn into a better major league player.

When Castillo did not make the opening day roster, that set the tone for how the Red Sox thought of him.

Castillo hit .245 while in the minors and showed no signs of progress toward the majors.

It is uncertain where Castillo will land but the Red Sox definitely want that money back.
