San Francisco 49ers Fire Coach Jim Tomsula

San Francisco, CA – The San Francisco 49ers announced Sunday night that Jim Tomsula was fired after only one season ahead of the team. The 49ers finished the dreadful season at 5-11.

Things have gone south for the 49ers since last season with Jim Harbaugh at the helm. Everyone was stunned at the hiring of Tomsula as he wasn’t a conventional choice for the head coaching job.

Owner Jed York had this to say about Tomsula “Jimmy has been a valuable member of the 49ers organization for the last nine years,” said York. “We all know he is a man of high character, and his contributions on the field and in our community have always been greatly appreciated. This entire organization is proud and grateful to have worked so closely alongside Jimmy. We all wish him and his family great success in the future.”

San Francisco’s situation isn’t easy and the next head coach will have a lot of cleaning to do. The team also saw an almost unprecedented number of key retirements last off-season: Patrick Willis, Chris Borland, Justin Smith and Anthony Davis all stepped aside (though Davis has said he may return).

Possible replacements for the job will be David Shaw, Vic Fangio, Adam Gase, Hue Jackson, Josh McDaniels, Sean McDermott, Matt Patricia and Sean Payton.
