Serie A: Juventus Wins Fifth Straight Title

Serie A

Turin, Italy – La Vecchia Signora Juventus have clinched their fifth consecutive Serie A Scudetto, following second-placed Napoli’s 1-0 defeat at Roma on Monday.

Turin’s legendary club has now equaled the club’s “Golden Quinquennium” of the early 1930s.

On Sunday, the Juventus won 2-1 at Fiorentina and now have a 12-point advantage over Napoli with three games to go. The title comes after hard work done by the entire team and manager Massimiliano Allegri who saw his team in 12th place and 11 points from the summit, ten matches into the season. They remarkably picked up 73 points from their subsequent 26 league fixtures, winning 24 and drawing only with Bologna in February. Juve conceded nine goals in their first ten outings of the campaign – the same number they have let in since.

Juventus goalkeeper, Gianluigi Buffon, attributes this season’s success to the added-time victory in the derby against Torino back in October, “The moment we really turned a corner was scoring in the 95th minute against Torino, that gave us a confidence boost and we began to see even the most unthinkable targets were within our reach.”

Buffon also feels that this season is the best of the last five seasons, even after picking up 102 points in the 2011/12 season under Antonio Conte’s management. “My first and this season’s have been the greatest of all my Scudetto victories,” the 38-year-old goalkeeper said. “This season has been crazy and unbelievable. This victory showed our strength both in terms of technique and character.”

For Juventus, Paulo Dybala was one of its best acquisitions this past summer. Dybala netted 16 times in the Italian top flight alone. “I joined Juve because I wanted to start winning trophies and I was sure I could do it here,” the 22-year-old said.

The Bianconeri wil now have a chance at a double when they meet AC Milan in the Coppa Italia on May 21.

34 champions account for La Vecchia Signora, most in all Italian top flight.
