Stewart Haas To Field Xfinity Team In 2017

Stewart Haas Racing announced on Monday that the team will field a full time entry in the NASCAR Xfinity Series beginning in 2017.

The team will expand its operation to include the full time single car Xfinity team with a driver and sponsor to be announced prior to the end of the 2016 season. The team will be run out of SHR’s headquarters in Kannapolis, NC, the same shop that houses its 4 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team.

“In order to maintain the competitiveness that earned SHR two championships since our debut in 2009, we needed an outlet to develop drivers and team personnel for the Sprint Cup Series,” said Greg Zipadelli, SHR’s Vice President of Competition. “People make the difference between winning and losing. An Xfinity Series team gives us added depth that will allow us to promote from within whenever necessary.”

Stewart Haas Racing, formed in 2009 as a partnership between NASCAR champion Tony Stewart and longtime series team owner Gene Haas, won its first Sprint Cup title with Tony Stewart in 2011 and earned a second with Kevin Harvick in 2014. The team has combined to win 33 points paying races, 2 non points events, and 28 pole positions.

Stewart also expressed his view about the timing of the expansion. “An Xfinity Series team has always been something we would consider when the time was right, and that time is now.” he said. “Staying successful in this sport means staying ahead of the curve, and having an Xfinity Series team provides an in-house driver development program and a new channel for personnel to make a positive impact with our race team.”
