Erick Aybar was sent to the Detroit Tigers in exchange for Mike Aviles and Class A catcher Kade Scivicque. So in a corresponding move the Atlanta Braves president of baseball operations, John Hart, made the announcement that the former Vanderbilt star and number 1 draft pick, Dansby Swanson will be joining the team.

Dansby was selected in the first round of the 2015 draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks, Swanson was then traded to the Atlanta Braves for starting pitcher Shelby Miller at the end of last season.

The 22-year-old shortstop has spent most of his time this year in Double A Mississippi producing a batting line of .261 AVG/ .342 OBP/ .402 SLG. Adding to those numbers, Swanson has 8 home runs and 6 stolen bases on the season.

Those numbers are impressive, however they were at the Double A level, John Hart commented on Dansby’s experience heading into his major league début:

“Obviously he doesn’t have Triple-A time, but I think every situation is unique. You look at the player. Dansby was a three-year starter at a major university and he was picked 1-1.” “I think a lot of the reasons why he was picked 1-1 have to do with his intangibles as well as his talent.

Dansby Swanson is ranked in the top 10 in all of baseball by MLB Pipeline and is ranked number 1 in the Braves farm system. It is interesting to point out that Dansby will join 3 other 2015 draft picks that were promoted to the majors in just over a year from their draft day. Those 2015 picks include the Astros Alex Bregman, the Boston Red Sox Andrew Benintendi and former teammate Carson Fulmer of the Chicago White Sox.

Dansby is expected to make his début against the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday, Swanson will likely start at shortstop and wear number 2. Fellow top prospect Ozzie Albies will stay in Double A Mississippi for the time being.
