Truex Facing Penalties For Illegal Parts At Talladega

Martin Truex Jr faces the potential of penalties issued by NASCAR after the sanctioning body confiscated illegal front jack screws from his #78 Furniture Row Racing Toyota.

NASCAR announced Saturday they had taken hollow front jack screws from the team during pre-qualifying inspection. According to rule which covers the car’s suspension, “Front jack screws must be constructed of solid, magnetic steel.”

Possible penalties could have a significant impact on Truex’s chances to advance in the chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship. Truex is currently eighth in the standings, with a 13 point cushion over ninth place. Only the top eight drivers advance following Sunday’s Hellmann’s 500 at Talladega.

Penalties could vary but would likely be of a P3 or P4 nature. P3 infractions could result in 15 point deductions, while a P4 would likely result in the driver and team being docked 25 points. However, since such a punishment would not be announced until after the race weekend is over, it will certainly be of significant interest in the coming days.

Without a win on Sunday, it’s possible that the 78 crew won’t be certain whether they advanced or not until long after the 2.66 mile tri-oval in Alabama goes silent.
