ANAHEIM, CA-The Anaheim Ducks have suffered some tough playoff exits the last four seasons. They will look to rebound from that in the 2016-17 season. Today, they ensured that one of the pieces they will look to to help them get over that disappointment comes back.

The Ducks signed defenseman Sami Vatanen to a four-year extension, the team announced on Saturday morning.

Vatanen had a career year in 2015-16. The 25-year-old Finland native set career highs in assists (29), points (38), and games played (71). He led the Ducks blue line in scoring, as well as in power-play points. He also pitched in with a goal and four points in seven playoff games this spring.

He has 29 goals, 98 points and is plus-25 in 194 career NHL games.

Vatanen’s year was the best for an Anaheim defender, scoring wise, since Lubomir Visnovsky and Cam Fowler led the Ducks defensemen with 68 and 40 points, respectively, in 2010-11.

According to reports, Vatanen’s extension is worth $19.5 million. The extension also keeps him from becoming a restricted free agent on July 1.

Anaeim’s fourth-round pick in the 2009 draft, Vatanen will be representing Finland in the upcoming World Cup of Hockey in September.
