Villarreal Boss Marcelino Leaves The Club Days Before Champions League Play-Off

Villarreal, Spain – Villarreal have parted ways with Marcelino less than a week before the Spanish club are due to play in their Champions League qualifier against Monaco, the club has announced.

The 50-year-old had been in charge at the club since 2013, having previously managed Sevilla and Zaragoza, and guided them to fourth place and Champions League qualification last season.

Villarreal play Monaco next Wednesday, with the return leg six days later – and start their league season at Granada on Saturday.

The news comes a day after the club also lost the striker Roberto Soldado for six months owing to a cruciate ligament tear. The 31-year-old’s injury means the summer signing Alexandre Pato is their only fit striker.

Club officials did not give a reason for the coaching staff departing but said they hope to announce an interim or permanent coach “in the coming hours”.

According to El Periodico Mediterraneo, Fran Escriba is set to replace Marcelino and will be appointed later in the day. At 51, Escriba has had experience with Elche (2012-15) and Getafe (2015-16) in the top flight.
