Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk will miss the EFL Cup final against Manchester United because of an injury

Southampton, England, United Kingdom – Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk will be out for about two to three months with an ankle problem, Saints boss Claude Puel confirmed.

Puel said: “van Dijk will stay not available for many weeks, two or three months. I don’t know how many times he will stay out but it’s a problem and it’s difficult.

“We are unlucky with Virgil because he was important for the group in defense with his quality and his leadership also.

The 25-year-old picked up the knock in a challenge by striker Jamie Vardy during Southampton’s 3-0 victory over Leicester City on 22 January.

Southampton defeated Liverpool last month to book their place in the final at Wembley Stadium on 26 February.

Saints losing their star man and central defender will be a big boost for Manchester United, their opponents in the EFL Cup final.
