Cubs land All-Star closer Wade Davis

The Chicago Cubs took a huge step forward on the way to defending their World Series Championship today when they acquired two-time All-Star closer Wade Davis from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for outfielder Jorge Soler. Davis appeared in 45 games going 2-1 with 27 saves while posting a 1.87 ERA in 2016. Davis is under contract through the 2017 season and is due to make $10 million. With news of  Aroldis Chapman reportedly agreeing to a 5-year, 86 million dollar contract with the New York Yankees, todays trade gives the Cubs the financial flexibility they need to add more pieces for the upcoming season.

Jorge Soler was signed by the Cubs as an amateur free agent in 2012 and made his major league debut in 2014. He appeared in 86 games last season hitting .238 with 12 home runs and 31 RBI. Soler took a back seat roll this season as he was placed on the disabled list in June with a strained left hamstring. The Cubs position player depth also played a large roll in the reduction of games this season, ultimately making him expendable. But are we to assume that because the Cubs have such tremendous depth that this should be seen as an indictment on Soler? The answer to that is no.

Soler has shown during his brief career that the upside many believe he has, far outweighs the cons. Soler is a power hitting outfielder with a plus arm in the field. He is also under contract until 2020 giving the Royals plenty of time to further evaluate and develop his game. He also adds depth to an outfield that desperately needs it. Upon hearing that Soler was traded, many Cubs fans took to twitter feeling like the organization could have gotten more for Soler, considering that Davis has been plagued with arm injuries that have limited his innings. It’s probably reasonable to assume that Cubs manager Joe Maddon’s familiarity with Davis made this an easy decision. At the end of the day, both teams secured help in valuable areas and positioned themselves towards making a push toward October.
