Washington Capitals clinch playoffs spot

After a whirlwind year with several twists and turns, the Washington Capitals became the first team to clinch a playoff birth into the NHL post-season. With a record of 46-17-8, they have been firing on all cylinders for the better part of the season. Their leading scorer, T.J Oshie, has 29 goals on the season and 20 assists for a total of 49 points.

Key Additions

To start the year, the Washington Capitals came in with high hopes on the year. The team entered the offseason looking to improve their team in any way possible after their elimination in the semi-finals the past few years. Although it had been a fairly quiet offseason, they decided to add Brett Connolly to their roster. This was the best possible move they could achieve in order to stay under the cap. They had one of the highest payrolls going into the offseason.

Nearing the trade deadline, the Capitals added Kevin Shattenkirk from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for a first round draft pick, a conditional second round draft pick and Zach Sanford. Additionally, Shattenkirk is going to be an unrestricted free agent this upcoming offseason. Also, the Blues retained a large portion of his salary. This would allow the Capitals the salary flexibility they needed to keep their current team.

Going into the postseason, the Capitals will be heavy favorites to win the Stanley Cup. Possessing one of the deepest lineups in the league, while also having one of the league’s premier goalies should serve the team well as they try to go on a deep run. Alexander Ovechkin will also be seeking his first Stanley Cup after being widely considered the best player in the NHL to not have at least one cup to his name. Getting a playoff birth will be just the beginning of the goals that they hope to achieve. It will be a very intriguing playoffs for this Washington Capitals team.
