Dont’a Hightower Is The Leader The Young Steelers Defense Needs

As it was announced today  per multiple reports, linebacker Dont’a Hightower of the New England Patriots is set to visit with the Steelers.  He is set to fly into Pittsburgh tonight, March 13th.

The addition of Hightower would be a huge upgrade for the Steelers defense.  With the defense improving with its young core of players such as Ryan Shazier and Bud Dupree, Hightower would provide experience and leadership.  Hightower has played five seasons in the league for the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots.  With that being said, he can help to show the young guys what it takes to win.

Hightower Is A Proven Playmaker

Another major reason that the Steelers should sign Hightower is that he has been extremely productive.  In his five seasons with New England, Hightower has showed that he can be an elite linebacker in the league.  Hightower has accumulated 372 tackles and 17 sacks in his first five seasons.  He was a key factor for the Patriots’ 2016 Super Bowl run as he finished with 65 tackles and 2.5 sacks.  As a result of those numbers, Hightower received his first Pro Bowl bid (didn’t play due to Super Bowl).

Inside Linebacker Is A Major Need For Pittsburgh

With Lawrence Timmons leaving for Miami, the Steelers need to find another inside linebacker to pair with Shazier.  Timmons was one of the leading tacklers for Pittsburgh over the past ten years as he accounted  for 981 tackles and 12 interceptions (one for a touchdown).  The next man up at the inside linebacker position would be Vince Williams who has had some experience.  However, it has mainly been on special teams and sparingly in the linebacker rotation.  With that being said, Timmons will be leaving behind big shoes to fill.  However, I believe that Hightower would be the perfect replacement.

What Will Hightower Cost?

Dont’a Hightower is arguably the best unsigned defensive free agent remaining.  With that being said, his price will be expected to be high, most likely higher than $10 million.  Also, he has had many other suitors including the Titans, Jets, and Patriots.  With many other teams possibly calling, it may raise his stock even higher. Although the price may be high, it is one that the Steelers shouldn’t hesitate to pay
