The Great Khali Returns at Battleground

Alright, we all were left scratching our heads over this one. We’ve (mostly) all accepted that Jinder Mahal is the champion of Smackdown Live. Maybe we don’t all agree on it, but it is what it is. Flanked by the Singh Brothers, Jinder has certainly come a long way since his days in the 3 Man Band. Yet, for some reason, the WWE felt the need to align the guy with the monstrous Great Khali.

Why? Well, according to Dave Meltzer, the reason is actually quite simple. Jinder Mahal became champion specifically to cater to the Indian market. Literally, Mahal was supposed to be the Cena of India. Naturally, things don’t always work out the way the WWE hopes. The ratings continue to slip. So, it’s safe to say that the WWE was dead wrong about Jinder. As a champion, he is not successful.

With that, Jinder took on Randy Orton this past Sunday. SD’s Battleground PPV was lackluster at best. The Punjabi Prison match between the two men could’ve been epic. Instead, it was tough to see the action. Just when you think it couldn’t get worse, it does.

Enter the Great Khali. Apparently, Khali is well-known in India and also very well-liked. By pairing Jinder with Khali, the hope is to increase Jinder’s popularity.

Although Khali looked confused, and maybe even thought he’d actually won the belt, he did help out Jinder Mahal to retain the title. To me, it looked like a scapegoat for the writers. Rather than developing a star in Jinder, he instead rides the coattails of a cemented one.

Additionally, Khali wasn’t on this week’s Smackdown Live episode. This raises the question on whether or not he will continue to be a part of the blue brand.
