Seth Rollins and Samoa Joe Steal the Show: Payback 2017 recap

Highlighted by Alexa Bliss defeating Bayley for the WWE RAW Women’s Championship and match that saw Seth Rollins and Samoa Joe steal the show, WWE Payback 2017 provided fans with an uneven experience.
With the build for the event leaving much to be desired, many fans went into the event with low expectations. So in that respect, the event lived up to expectations, I guess.
The event itself kicked off with the United States Championship match between Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens.

This may have been the ideal match to kick the event off, proper. Granted, Enzo and Cass defeated The Club during the preshow, but Jericho and Owens kicked off the event itself.

And given the build of the match itself the two lived up to those expectations. The two waged war in what seemed like the final encounter between the two former-best friends.

I say it seemed like it would have been the final match between the two, before Jericho came out on top in the end, much to the surprise of many in the crowd. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it wasn’t a cool twist. It was an unexpected ending, so for that fact alone, it was the best possible match to kick off the event.
Following that match was the Cruiserweight Championship match between Austin Aries and Neville.
This match, given who was participating, actually disappointed, especially given the match the two had at WrestleMania a few weeks ago.

In the end, Neville ended up retaining the title via disqualification after he pulled the referee over himself and Aries as it appeared as if Neville was about to tap out.

Championship shocker

Another highlight of the night had to be Alexa Bliss defeating Bayley for the RAW Women’s Championship.

In what felt like the second big shocker of the night, Bliss was able to take advantage of Bayley getting rattled by the turnbuckle post and Bliss was able to secure the three count for the win.

This makes Bliss the first woman in WWE History to have held both the RAW and Smackdown Women’s Championships. Shockingly so perhaps, but Bliss appears to have completely taken Charlotte’s spot as the top female on the WWE roster. Given where she was a few short years ago just shows how much Bliss has come since debuing in NXT.

But clearly something is working, she has become among the better heels on the RAW roster in her short time on “the red brand.”
After the Bliss vs Bayley match however, the crowd seemed to die, quite a bit. I’m not sure if it was because of the hometown girl losing her title or something, but the crowd really seemed to lose steam after that match.

Seth Rollins and Samoa Joe Steal The Show

Which is really a shame. Because Seth Rollins and Samoa Joe had a WrestleMania quality match following the Women’s match.

The story being told wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. It was basically two dudes who didn’t like each other beating the crap out of each other. Simple enough, right?

But the two of them really pulled out all of the stops in this one. The match was fast paced, but it never bled into a no selling spotfest. Which is a hard line to play on but the two of them performed it super effectively and in turn, put forth one of the best matches in the WWE in 2017.
