Shawn Michaels, the Heartbreak Kid, is an eight-time WWE World Heavyweight Championship. He is also a two-time Royal Rumble winner (and the first man to win the match as the number one entrant); the first WWF Grand Slam Champion, and the fourth WWF Triple Crown Champion. He retired from professional wrestling in 2010; after losing at Wrestlemania 26 to The Undertaker (streak vs career match).

Life after Wrestlemania 26,

After his retirement match, Mr. Wrestlemania was inducted into the Hall of Fame and then became a WWE Ambassador (2012–2015). In late 2016, he became a trainer at the WWE Performance Centre and now is very much involved with NXT.

Is he itching for One More Match?

This time last year; it was heavily rumored that The Showstopper could come out of retirement to battle AJ Styles at WrestleMania. Aj Styles thought that HBK may be getting the itch to return to the squared circle; he asked WWE brass to look into it. It’s a dream match for wrestling fans but the WWE Hall of Famer seems content with being retired and it never came to pass.

Now, the decorated Superstar has weighed in on those reports and why he wasn’t tempted to go to war with The Phenomenal One:

“There was talk about it possibly happening at WrestleMania. I think he’s an unbelievably talented young man. I wish I was 10 to 15 years younger because there are so many great guys. But it’s very important to me, I wouldn’t have retired unless I was ready to walk away. I’m flattered that every year when WrestleMania comes up people talk about me coming back, but I enjoy my time with my family, I enjoy watching WrestleMania and I also enjoy watching WWE move into the future.”

Shawn Michaels speaks on the importance of staying retired,

“It’s very important that continues to happen and the only way for it to do so is for some of us in a dignified way to walk away. Much as it would be interesting to be in there with some of those young men, it’s their time now and I think it’s important that we focus on them and the future of the WWE.”

It’s easy to see where HBK is coming from, especially as “one more match”, will probably turn into several, and that will keep him away from his family.

Upcoming RAW 25, and hear what he had to say about potentially reuniting with DX,

“It will be a blast. It’s one of those things from a comfort standpoint and thinking about all the unbelievable, crazy things we did down the years on Monday Night Raw… it will be something that is in my wheelhouse and a lot of fun to do. The reuniting of DX will be a blast. It’s going to be simulcast, which I don’t think has been done for quite a long time, from the Barclays Center and the Manhattan Center. I think there will be a lot of exciting things going on that night. And I say that because I have found out absolutely nothing! People keep asking me, which one am I going to be at, and I don’t know yet. I think they might keep all of us in the dark, until right before show time, so it’s exciting for everybody.”

Who should win between HBK vs Styles?

Additionally, the Heartbreak Kid suggests that Mr. Wrestlemania going over The Phenomenal One in their hypothetical match will hurt ‘P1’, and he doesn’t want to return to the ring just to lose a return match.

Shawn Michaels gives his thought on” the finish” of the dream match.

“Let me ask you this: who wins? From a business standpoint, what do you do? Old sentimentality! Do you do that and kill [Styles]. It doesn’t do anything for [Styles] and it hurts [Styles] bad.” HBK continued, “So fine, then you do it to me, and it doesn’t do anything [to hurt Styles] and it’s spectacular. But it’s like, if you’re going to come back and do something, why would I do that and lose, whatever, three, four, five in a row or whatever it was? I mean, creatively, that’s kind of anticlimactic as well.”

He started his career from a young, rebellious character who didn’t care who he stepped on to get to the top; and ended as a humble veteran who crawls his way up to The Undertaker and slapped him on the way to being another victim to The Phenom on his way out of WWE.

HBK knows nothing can top that; so there’s no need to attempt it, and damage that story for the sake of one more match; his moment with The Deadman won’t be topped.

So we just have to keep dreaming; but it would be awesome to see AJ Styles vs HBK dream match at Wrestlemania.

TSJ Writer’s side note:

I would love to see DX and Balor Club doing some sort of a gimmick match with another team; and after the match they do the “too sweet”, and then BC beating down DX to close the show.
