Has WWE Booked themselves into a Corner?

The Issue

At WrestleMania 34, fans can already expect to see Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns. The plan has already been set in motion. Brock won the Universal Championship at WrestleMania 33. Roman Reigns was not drafted to Smackdown during the Superstar Shakeup. Paul Heyman teased the match on Monday Night Raw. The stage is set to begin the build to next year’s big super fight.

Then the bookers outsmarted themselves. They forgot how much the fans hate Roman Reigns. Even more concerning is that they failed to realize how popular Braun Strowman has become. Lastly they seem to be rushing a collision between Brock and Braun. That match is the one that would benefit the most from a long build. That may be the better main event at WrestleMania 34. What should WWE do now?

First Build the Beast

WWE has gone out of their way to establish Brock Lesnar as their premier attraction. They have made him virtually unstoppable, with the exception of the Goldberg debacle. There has been a string of violent feuds seeing him conquer streaks, Legend Killers, the face of the company, and even Triple H since his return. He is seemingly ahead of all of his competition. Over the next year, he has to be built up to be even more unbeatable. Fans have to want to see him lose. They have to crave a Brock defeat. That presents yet another issue.

Convince everyone they are wrong

With the reception Roman Reigns has received for the better part of 2 years, it would appear virtually impossible that the fans will ever buy into him being the face of the company. Vince McMahon has put everything behind him. With back to back WrestleMania Main Events coupled with Championship Gold, you would think he would have a great following. Despite the WWE’s best efforts, he remains a social outcast in the eyes of the fan base. The hail of boos that he receives whenever he walks to the ring is deafening. Hearing the cheers of “Thank You Strowman” throughout the arena when he attempted to end Roman Reigns should have sent the message. Alas, the Main Event of WrestleMania 34 is still on.

Stomp out the flame of Braun Strowman

To have any chance of making the Brock vs Reigns match a success, WWE needs to do one more thing. Destroy the momentum of Braun Strowman. That organic fan base has to go. Braun can’t get over any more. We can’t have babyface heels. All of the money that has been invested in creating a new star has to be forgotten about. Book Braun to lose to a Lucha Dragon. Oh wait. That has been done. Write him off TV for a while so he can heal some injuries. That should slow him down. What do you do when he returns to a standing ovation? Have him lose to Curt Hawkins. Have him team up with James Ellsworth. Give him a valet and a flashy new robe. Repackage him. Stop the insanity!

What needs to be done

WWE needs to understand something that they have been missing for the past several years. It isn’t 1985 any more. WrestleMania is not just the biggest show of the year. It brings in tens of thousands for the best matches of the year. This is what wrestling fans wait for. It is what draws 100,000 people to AT&T Stadium for WrestleMania 32. It is the showcase of the immortals and thus should be filled with the most exciting matches possible. AJ Styles should be facing Shinsuke Nakamura. The Undertaker typically makes his annual appearance. All of the titles are defended. Most of all, the Beast should be facing Braun Strowman.

WWE has booked themselves into a corner here. And what is the most frustrating thing of all? Fans knowing a year in advance that Vince McMahon will kill off one of their beloved characters. Roman Reigns will still be crammed down our throats. Brock will continue to be an absentee Universal Champion. Most frustrating though is the knowing that Brock vs Braun won’t be the headline at WrestleMania 34.
